On Russia Day, Sites of Opposition and Independent Media Attacked by Hackers

reports that on 12th June the websites of Echo of Moscow Radio, Novaya gazeta, and of the TV channel Rain and the journal Slon.Ru suffered DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. The editors of Rain TV reported that their site had been attacked by hackers.

The TV company Rain reported on Twitter: "It started with a DDoS attack on our internet providers, then broadcasting on all our sites was disrupted!"

Novaya Gazeta tweeted: “We were subjected to a DDos attack. We undertook measures. You can still enjoy our online content on Facebook. Any support is welcome.””

Andrei Khodorchenkov, editor-in-chief of the Echo of Moscow website reported: “We did suffer a DDoS attack, but we beat them off. The site is accessible but it runs very slowly.”

The editor of Slon.Ru, Tonya Samsonova, tweeted: “People have been accessing Slon all day.”

On 12th June in Moscow the second “March of Millions” took place. It ended with a rally on Sakharov Prospect. According to the organisers, the number of participants exceeded 200,000.
