The military unit in which the 23-year-old Aleksandr Bergin served has paid compensation to his mother, Svetlana Berbina, Kazan Human Rights Centre reports.

Svetlana Berbina told human rights defenders today that military unit No. 3730, stationed in Kazan, has transferred 250,000 roubles to her account. At the present time, the father and sister of the deceased are waiting to receive 250,000 and 50,000 roubles respectively, awarded as compensation for emotional harm. The Berbin family is being represented by the Kazan Human Rights Centre.

Warrant Officer Anatoly Fedotov, who was drunk, assaulted Private Aleksandr Berbin on 12 June 2009 on the premises of the Kazan gunpowder factory. An investigation concluded that this had caused Berbin to develop a "temporary psychological disorder manifested as acute stress response, caused by the sudden threat to his life".

The 23-year-old soldier, who had gone on sentry duty, committed suicide by inserting the barrel of the gun into his mouth and pulling the trigger.

Last spring the Kazan garrison military court found Warrant Officer Anatoly Fedotov of military unit No. 3730 guilty of abuse of rank, with the use of force and the infliction of grave consequences, and sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment in a minimum security penal colony. The convicted person was banned from holding command duty in the armed forces for a period of two years and was stripped of his rank.
