First Meeting of “Round Table of Twelfth of December” to Take Place on 6 February

The first meeting of the “Round Table of Twelfth of December” since its foundation will take place in Moscow at the Hotel Metropol on Monday 6 February between 2pm and 6pm. Registration will begin at 1:30pm.

The agenda for the first meeting will include the following issues:
  • General contours of the civic platform on creating a systemic alternative to the regime of one-person rule; 
  • Relationship to the current presidential elections – developing a general civic position; 
  • Proposals by Golos on changing electoral law. 

As Novaya gazeta writes, “The ‘Round Table of Twelfth of December’ was founded on 12 December 2011. The Memorandum setting it up was signed by 60 people, including civil society activists, human rights defenders, experts, cultural figures and scientists.

Those who took part in the founding assembly were the lawyer Yury Shmidt, film director Yury Norshtein, the writers Vladimir Voinovich and Aleksandr Kabakov, the academics Yury Ryzhov and Evgeny Yasin, the actresses Liya Akhedzhakova and Natalya Fateeva, political scientists Liliya Shevtsova and Georgy Satarov, human rights defenders Ludmila Alekseeva, Sergei Kovalev and Aleksei Simonov, and the co-chairs of the People’s Freedom Party - Boris Nemtsov, Mikhail Kasyanov and Vladimir Ryzhkov. The participants discussed the situation in the country and means to achieve a non-violent transition to democracy.

In the Memorandum the founders called on all groups in society to come together and act jointly to prevent a national catastrophe. They also set out the tasks of the “Round Table of Twelfth December.”
