Head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Ludmila Alekseeva, has given her support to the so called ‘people’s promenades’ of civic activists in Moscow, calling them a contemporary form of protest.

As Radio Liberty reports, on the evening of 24 May 84-year-old Ludmila Alekseeva visited the camp set up by civic activists next to the statue of Bulat Okudzhava on the Arbat. She spoke with those taking part in the protest and said that she was ‘deeply touched’ by what she saw, in particular the fact that there were so many young people at the camp who were calling for human rights and freedoms to be respected.
