An opinion poll about Russian people's attitudes to Stalin, conducted by the Levada Centre on 15-18 February 2013, involved a representative nationwide sample of a mixed urban and rural population of 1,600 people aged 18 and over in 130 villages, towns and cities in 45 regions across the country. The distribution of responses are given as percentages of the total number of people questioned together with data from previous surveys. The statistical error of the data from these surveys is no higher than 3.4%.

their own authority by portraying themselves as the successors to the
glorious victors of the war

The Russian authorities are trying to use the cult of Stalin to gradually
resurrect the Soviet system

The Russian authorities are trying to use the cult of Stalin out of a sense of hopelessness, as a substitute for a "national idea" which does not exist,

WHAT DO YOU THINK LIES BEHIND THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL AND SENIOR  OFFICIALS FOR THE IDEA OF CHANGING THE NAME OF VOLGOGRAD
BACK TO STALINGRAD?

Feb 2013

A desire to perpetuate the memory of those
who fought in the Battle of Stalingrad

31

A desire to reassociate the name of Stalin with the leader
who won the war, thereby playing down memories of
Stalinist repressions and the crimes of his regime

18

A desire to deflect public attention away from corruption
scandals, loss of trust in the authorities and the rise in
opposition activity
