![]() Source: HRO.org (info) Members of the Presidential Human Rights Council are to inspect the penal colony in Mordovia where imprisoned Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has gone on hunger strike. The press service of the Presidential Human Rights Council has stated that on Tuesday 24 September a group of Council members “travelled as a matter of urgency to investigate reports of human rights violations in one of the penal colonies for women in Mordovia." Maria Kannabikh, Elena Masiuk, Evgeny Myslovsky and Ilya Shablinsky are to visit penal colonies Nos. 2, 13 and 14 of the Penitentiary Service of the Russian Federation in Mordovia. The report on the visits will be published on the Council’s website, according to Rosbalt. Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who is serving her sentence in Mordovian penal colony No. 14, has announced that she has gone on hunger strike. She has also refused to work in the Colony’s sewing shop. Her protest is in response to the widespread violations of the rights of women prisoners during compulsory work. In addition, Tolokonnikova has brought a complaint to the Investigative Committee that the deputy head of the Colony made a death threat to her. |
