Convicted member of the Pussy Riot music group Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has declared an indefinite hunger strike in connection with a death threat she received from the deputy head of Colony № 14, Yury Kupriyanov. An urgent collection of signatures for a petition in support of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has begun.

Responding to the demand to abolish the 16-hour working day and do away with the terrible working conditions of women prisoners in the sewing shop, according to Tolokonnikova, Kupriyanov stated: "Things will certainly never be bad for you that’s for sure, because in the afterlife things are never bad."

The civic activist said that she had been receiving threats every day since then from a number of convicts who claim that they have been given permission by the penal colony’s management to use physical violence against her.

Tolokonnikova has submitted a complaint about a crime to the head of the Investigative Department of the Russian Investigative Committee for Mordovia, Mikhail Nazarov. Copies have been sent to the Republic's Public Prosecutor, Valery Machinsky; the director of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, Gennady Kornienko; and Human Rights Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, describing the unbearable psychological conditions in the residential unit and sewing shop, asks the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service to consider transferring her to another colony, as she fears for her life.

In a statement, Tolokonnikova reports on widespread violations of the rights of women prisoners in the workshop: the failure of working conditions in the sewing shop to comply with the health and sanitary regulations prescribed by Russian legislation and the Labour Code, or with safety and manufacturing regulations for prisoners.
