Statement by the International Memorial Society: "... The authors of the sentence imposed on Khodorkovsky and Lebedev, the real authors of this sentence, like their Soviet predecessors, do not believe in the existence of the court of history..."

Moscow’s Khamovniky court has imposed a sentence on Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev. The sentence is cruel, unfair and unjust.

All that could be said about this has already been said. It remains only to point out that this is not the final court.

We do not have in mind Moscow City Court, or the Supreme Court of Russia, or even the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. We have in mind the court of history.

The authors of the sentence imposed on Khodorkovsky and Lebedev, the real authors of this sentence, like their Soviet predecessors, do not believe in the existence of the court of history.

In this they are quite wrong. It is very likely that this court will sit in judgment during their lifetimes.
