Statement by Memorial Human Rights Centre: The Murder of Kamalov is a Blow against Russia

Tonight we learned with horror of the death of the founder and publisher of the independent newspaper Chernovik, Khadzhimurad Kamalov. On 16 December he was shot dead in Makhachkala by unidentified people outside the entrance to the paper’s editorial office. 

Without doubt, this is a politically motivated murder. Those who are behind this crime want to deal a blow to freedom of speech in Dagestan, to force all those not afraid to express independent judgments about what is happening in Russia to be silent. For many years the newspaper Chernovik, for which Khadzhimurad Kamalov was the inspiration, remained a voice for truth, although the editors were continually under pressure. [Read more]
