Supreme Court dismisses appeal by Lev Ponomarev against refusal to allow him to stand in elections

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by human rights defender Lev Ponomarev, executive director of the Movement For Human Rights, against the refusal by the Central Election Commission to allow him to stand as a candidate in the parliamentary elections. 

The appeal hearing also turned down a petition by the lawyer Evgeny Ikhlov to review the case on its merits, Kasparov.ru reported, citing Interfax. In his statement to the court, Evgeny Ikhlov wrote: “Since the appeal court is both appellate and cassational in nature, I request that the complaint be considered on its merits. Moreover, because of the contradiction between the constitutional and legislative norms in question, I request that an appeal be sent to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.”
