The founding meeting of the Round Table took place in Moscow on Constitution Day. Participants included the lawyer Yury Shmidt, the film director Yury Norshtein, the writers Vladimir Voinovich and Aleksandr Kabakov, academics Yury Ryzhov and Evgeny Yasin, the actresses Liya Akhedzhakova and Natalya Fateeva, the political scientists Liliya Shevtsova and Georgy Satarov, human rights defenders Ludmila Alekseeva, Sergei Kovalev and Aleksei Simonov, and also the co-chairs of the People’s Freedom Party Boris Nemtsov, Mikhail Kasyanov and Vladimir Ryzhkov. 

As Radio Liberty reports, the well-known Russian lawyer Yury Shmidt said that this initiative is linked to the need for talks between government and society. 

As the letter sent to electronic media states, the founders wish to create a mechanism that will enable a peaceful transition from authoritarian, one-person rule into a democratic system based on the rule of law. [Read more]
