The prolific author, screen writer and translator Boris Natanovich Strugatsky has died in St. Petersburg aged 79. Strugatsky, who was also the chief editor of the journal Noon. 21st Century, spent his final days in hospital. Strugatsky’s literary colleagues said Russian literature has lost a colossal icon with the writer’s passing. Strugatsky was not only a leading figure in science fiction, but a profound writer who explored the most significant and difficult topics of his time.
