Statement by the International Memorial Society on the Verdict in the Trial of Yulia Timoshenko

“Two days ago the verdict handed down by the Pechersky district court in Kyiv on 11 October in the trial of former Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, was published on the Internet. 

Without having had an opportunity to give a thorough legal assessment to this verdict, we nonetheless believe it is necessary to state the following. 

The criminal prosecution of former political leaders with respect to administrative decisions they made while in office demands particular caution on the part of the court in determining intention, the nature of the crime, losses incurred, and so forth, as well as in determining the appropriate punishment. At the same time, special attention must be paid to observing the right to a fair trial. [Read more]
