Venice Commission Criticizes Russian laws on Extremism and the FSB

The European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, has strongly criticized Russia’s federal law on the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the federal law on combating extremist activity, reports Lenta.ru, citing the newspaper Kommersant. The Commission released its opinions on the two laws on 20 June. According to the Commission, the laws are too vague and unpredictable, creating the possibility of encroachment by authorities on the fundamental rights and freedoms of Russian citizens. [Read more]
